Press release, 2018, May 3th
On the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day, AMARC recalls that journalists from thousands of community radio stations play a fundamental role in ensuring the daily freedom of the press around the world.
“Thanks to their journalists, community radio stations inform tens of millions of people, often in remote and marginalized areas, to improve their daily life and their community. It is time for the sector to be recognized by all states, under the same conditions as other local radio broadcasters” , says Francesco Diasio, AMARC Secretary General .
UN recognizes community media workers as journalists to protect.
In dozens of countries, radio stations are censored and sentenced, while journalists are harassed, attacked, detained and even killed. AMARC extends its condolences to the families and loved ones of the nine killed and six seriously injured journalists in a double bombing in Kabul, Afghanistan, on April 30.
As every year, AMARC, UNESCO associated NGO, calls for the respect of press freedom to states, international organizations, NGOs, private companies, individuals and media regulators.
